Hi everyone,

Just wondering for those of you out there who have a wand, did you make it yourself of did you buy it?  I have seen some really nice wands out there for sale but when i've picked them up I wasn't really 'feelin it' if you know what I mean, sort of like our energies didn't gel.

I have been thinking about making my own wand, I am very drawn to Willow, always have been.  Now, to obtain a suitable piece of willow I understand first I must seek the trees permission and always thank the tree for letting me take the wood, but do I have to take a piece from the ground which has already fallen or is it ok for me to take it from one of the trees branches?

Once I have got the wood for my wand do I have to do anything in particular with it to make it a wand or can I use it as it is?

Thanks

SW

I make wands.  I do sometimes cut, but when I do, it's always because the branch needs pruning, anyway, and I confess to having a process that is a bit more elaborate than most.

I go out the day before cutting and ask the trees I need to cut for permission, then make offerings to the tree.  The next morning I come back to make my cuts.  I only take a few branches from any tree, unless the tree is to be removed for some reason.

The "wand blanks" are taken home and laid out where they can dry slowly for no less than a year.  If I'm planning to strip the bark, I do that green, as it is harder when they're dry.  I mark all bundles with the species of tree, too, because a year later, you can easily mistake one for another by sight.

After the wood is properly aged and dry, I can begin working on carving it.  You don't want to work green wood, because as it dries, it might crack, and you wouldn't want that to ruin your artistry.  If you're wanting the wand to be basically just a natural stick, you can remove the stubs of twigs, smooth the ends and rub in a little oil to help preserve the wood, and begin using it right away, but for more elaborate wands, you'll want to age it so that any cracks that develop can be worked around in the finished design.

As for what to do to "make it a wand", I do a consecration of the wand(s) to their dedicated purpose(s).  I try to make certain that the wood selected corresponds to the purpose I'm needing.
