 Survey Profiles Nonreligious Americans

A recent survey took a close look at the "nonreligious" population, offering a picture of what they are really like and determining whether stereotypes of nonbelievers are accurate.

Survey Profiles Nonreligious Americans

The two most interesting items in this article for me were:

* 'Nonreligious individuals were also found to have greater "openness to experience," which involves a high need for cognition, intellectual engagement, and xenophilia (interest in new experiences), than religious individuals.'

* 'Churchgoers, on the other hand, reported higher "agreeableness," or a quality of being amiable or nonconfrontational as opposed to skeptical of others. The low agreeableness among nonbelievers indicates that strong nonreligious individuals appear to be somewhat less likely to acquiesce to or to trust others, the report stated.'

another point the article made is that they drew the survey from an activist group, so these results are more representative of nonreligious folk who are also into nonreligious activism.

Wonder what the results would have been if they had compared between different religions for "agreeableness", "non confrontational", etc.

Or if they'd look at non-activist groups who are into something else such as SCA or some other sub-culture.

I don't know, but I think such a survey would be interesting. I know there is major variation just in the Pagan religions.
