I don't understand the concept of Mabon.  I know a little bit of the lore behind it--The Goddess is shifting to the Crone aspect and the Lord is making His second sacrifice (as the harvest), but I don't understand why Wicca(ns) uses Mabon as a name for this festivial?  What is the purpose of celebrating Mabon?  Does it have anything to do with Mabon ap Modron?

Im at work so I cant get into to much depth with this but Mabon is celebrated like Thanksgiving is celebrated.  We get together to give thanks for the harvests and to the animals that will sustain us over the winter.

yeah. I always think of it as a bbq thanksgiving. Also, I usually do some kind of working that is focused on gratitude and getting ready for the deeper self reflection I do for Samhain. Sort of like the send off party before the journey to the Underworld.

Here are some links I dug up about Mabon

Goddess grant me:

to accept with ease & grace what I cannot change.

  The power of Fire,
for the energy & courage to change the things I can.

  The power of Air,
for the ability and wisdom to know the difference.

  And the power of Earth,
for the strength to continue my path.

Mabon was added to the Wiccan calendar to balance out the wheel of the year. Historically the ancients didn't pay much attention to the Equinoxes.

I believe the naming can be traced to NROOGD (New Reformed Orthodox Order of the Golden Dawn).

Like others have said it's come to be "the witches' Thanksgiving".

I should have said the Autumn Equinox was added to the calendar (by Gardner's folks)...the name "Mabon" came later.
