I was looking at an online pagan store, they had a Mabon alter kit.  In it they had Mabon incense.  I'm trying to find some good ideas for incense or potpourri for my altar and was wondering what others used.  What are good scents?  I'm thinking cloves, ginger, cinnoman. Spices.  I also have pumpkin and apple fragrances I use for lotions.

Basically, curious what others have used in the past.  My altars, in the past, have tended to be over the top with things.  I'm trying to back it down a bit and make what I have on there more meaningful then "ohh! this is kewl!" Though, I will admit, my Samhain will probaly still be over the top.  Cheesy That one just begs for it.

Thanks for any thoughts, opinions or ideas.

I'm trying to find some good ideas for incense or potpourri for my altar and was wondering what others used.

I don't tend to use seasonal incense and stay far away from food scented candles and lotions (because they make me hungry!) I use sandalwood, dragonsblood, and some scent called "rain" from my local pagan store (who makes their own incense and oils) when I'm burning incense.

Having said that, a cinnamon stick/dried apple potpourri would work well this time of year. I don't know that I'd try burning it since cinnamon can be an irritant to some folks. Anything sort of spicy or "chai" scented might work.

Apple leaves and wood have a slightly fruity smell as they burn, which I've used in autumnal incenses in the past. Personally the spices you mention are associated more with winter in my mind, so I'd be more likely to use them later in the year. Benzoin has a honey like scent which might work well with apple. I'd aim for a fruity bonfire hint to it as I associate that strongly with autumn. Possibly the raisin'y smell of night copal.... Hmm I might have to go off and make some incense now!
