For some reason, once I have written a paragraph or two, the white part of the post area will not allow me to see what I am typing.  It's kinda hard to explain, but while I'm typing the screen will not allow me to see what I am typing or allow me to go below a certain point.  I've tried scrolling down, pressing the enter button, and still nothing.  Once while I was still typing, it did go past that point, but it hasn't since then.  I don't think it's my computer, because I have tried on other computers, but the same thing occurs.

No one has ever reported such a problem here before nor have I seen such problems reported on other SMF boards. I doubt there is anything I can do from this end. It could be many things on your end (including misconfigured  adblockers, firewalls, anti-virus programs, etc.)

IE8 does that same thing to me.  Mozilla Firefox does not.

IE8 does not seem to like SMF in general.  Or at least some versions of IE8 have problems, different problems depending on what MS patches are applied.  I don't use IE, but there are supposedly compatibility modes for sites it doesn't like. If there are such things, you might try them.  I doubt SMF 1.x will be rewritten to make make IE8 happy.

Firefox, Opera, and Chrome apparently do not have these problems.

Chances are, if you're running IE8, that's what's doing it - I had the same exact problem.

I tried Chrome out for awhile & use it to update my signatures.

For everything else, I chanced upon a browser called SeaMonkey, and I love it (here's where it lives if anyone's interested: http://www.seamonkey-project.org/). It runs on the Mozilla engine. My only complaint is that it's hard for me to create forum signatures because it adds a horizontal scroll bar to the bottom of the text boxes, which is why I switch back to Chrome for that purpose. It also doesn't have IE8's nifty InPrivate browsing... but I use that at work moreso than home.

SeaMonkey has been a perfect fit for me otherwise. It's like IE8 without all the Microsoft, LiveSearch browser hijacking and constant redirections to Bing.

Ooh, thanks!  I'm a diehard Mozilla Navigator user, and find that Firefox just doesn't quite feel right - I'm very happy to learn Nav still has a direct descendant.

You're welcome Smiley I'm just getting tired of being so Microsoft-product dependent. Then when they do something like automatically make my search engine LiveSearch or Bing, or make all my search queries take me directly to a page instead of giving me a results list (and what's worse, this last time all my searches went directly to wikipedia) and no matter how I hack up my registry I can't get rid of it, I'm 'stuck' with it because I can't let go of IE's easy-mode framework.

SeaMonkey's got the best of IE - tabbed browsing, customizable search engine choice, cookie & pop-up management... and it's not a MS brain(dead)child.

Heh - I've been intentionally avoiding/minimizing MS-dependence for just about forever (was an Amiga user for many years); current 'puter runs SuSE Linux.

Yeah.  It's IE8.  I had to upgrade yesterday, and today--whaddya know?  I'm having the exact.  Same.  Problem.  Rarely, after a paragraph-ish it'll fix itself, but I can't see any pattern in which that happens.

And this is my work computer.  I'm not allowed to install alternate browsers.  Sigh.  Either I'll get used to it, or I'll start typing out my posts in a text editor and copying/pasting them in here.  (Anyone else doing this, a reminder:  Preview before posting.  Sometimes when you do this, line breaks and such get lost.)

I have to wonder if it's not a javascript issue. The buttons in the editor are powered by javascript and Microsoft is noted for not following standards well on their version of javascript.

Gah!  I am having the same problem.  It's really frustrating because you just have to type blindly and then preview 10x to get through fixing all the mistakes. Good to know I can use Firefox and it won't be an issue.

I may be wrong, but I think you can fix that with a little button on the right side of the windows bar (assuming you have Vista).  You may also be able to change your settings in the Control Panel.

That may be true as well, because the library computer has the same problem and it runs an older version of IE.

If that's the case, then I do suspect it's specifically IE's latest handling of Javascript...  I was just fine on IE7 until I upgraded to 8, and then started having the problem, but I wouldn't bet on my having had everything up-to-date on 7.
