Ann's Spinning Stuff

I'm a fairly new spinner, not quite two years as of when this is written (November '97), but I'm an enthusiastic one. I'm not sure at this point which of my many (too many?) enthusiasms takes priority, but spinning is definitely up there. I began when an on-line friend coached me through thigh-spinning some fiber she'd sent -- and boy am I glad she didn't see it! -- then continued with a drop spindle and instructions to use it.

The spindle is a commercial one, weighing about 3 oz. It drove me nuts, breaking the yarn I was trying to spin practically every time. So I made some out of fender washers, dowels, and opened-up screw eyes. That helped, so I made more with toy wheels instead of the fender washers, which got me thoroughly hooked. I started making spindles for myself and friends, then recently tried making less conventional ones (ones with whorls that aren't round). Below are some of my efforts.

Eventually (like within 9 months) I got an Ashford Traveller spinning wheel. It ended up beside my computer, so I could do on-line writing and spin when it was someone else's turn to write.

And of course you need a place to prepare fibers. This area is right behind the computer area of my desk.
