The artist who drew this deck works for the Angel Playing Card Company of Japan. The symbolism here is based on the Rider deck, but done in traditional Japanese woodblock (Ukiyoe) style from the Tokagawa period of Japanese history. The Major Arcana and court cards of the Minor are wonderful, using strong, simple lines to delineate character, while strong colors -- often shading from dark to light -- pick out the details of the designs of garb and such. Even the numbered minor arcana, while mostly pips, have enough stuff going on in the background that they're capable of holding your interest. This is one of my favorite decks, and I strongly recommend it -- and not just to those who like Japanese art!
